SIGNIFICANCE OF A SLEEVE: Admittedly, the mayfly is somewhat like a Canada Goose – perhaps best appreciated singly or at least in small groups. But this elegant insect has become synonymous with the Western Basin of Lake Erie due to immense “emergences” during the spring and summer.
 
Mayflies actually spend the vast majority of their lifecycle at the very bottom of the lake, entombed in mud, silt, or sand. But after a year or more out of sight, individuals rise to the surface (sometimes literally by the millions), unfurl their wings, and set out for their short-lived existence in the sky -- or covering about anything and everything in their flight path. Their terrestrial existence may only be measured in days or even hours, but they leave a lasting impression. Certain mayfly species are thought to be a sign of improving water quality, so we’ll take them . . . and so will any hungry walleye or perch!
